5 Things Every Teen Should Know

For this collaboration with @teensurvivalkit1 I wanted to do a blog focusing on ways that people struggling with their mental health can deal with their struggles. Mental health issues are difficult enough to deal with, and after multiple lockdowns, a pandemic and having to get used to such different ways of life- things certainly haven't got any easier. Before I begin this blog I want to say, some things will work for people and other things won't, mental health is unique to each and every person- don't give up if the first thing on the list doesn't work out, just try to stay positive and keep persevering!

1. Surround yourself with healthy relationships
Admittedly, this one is easier said than done. But what I mean by it is, recovering or dealing with a mental health issue is a lot harder when you have unhealthy relationships. Finding people that treat you kindly and respectfully, who support you and help you stay optimistic, can make it a lot less painful to go through.

2. Living a healthy lifestyle
A strong body leads to a strong mind, getting enough sleep, exercise and nutrients can make a huge difference in how you cope with mental health. I know that for me personally, finding a routine and exercising more in the last lockdown made a world of difference, I felt happier and more productive. This tip is definitely one I would recommend.

3. Asking for help
It takes a lot of strength and bravery to admit you need support, and it takes even more to ask for it. Remember: asking for help is not a sign of weakness. We are human, we need help sometimes just as much as other people need our help sometimes. As teens you may feel like a burden or a bother- but this is far from the truth. Below are some numbers or websites you can visit if you ever need to talk <3

4. Finding a coping method
This one seems a bit more general, and that's because it is. As I said before, different things work for different people. For me, music always seems to help me clarify my thoughts and emotions- and my many playlists cater to every emotion and issue. Whether it's a stress ball or writing a diary, talking to a therapist or meeting up with friends, finding what works for you is so important when it comes to dealing with mental health.

5. Remember who has the power
It can be easy to feel helpless and powerless when struggling with your mental health, but it is important to remember who is in control. You! Even when it might not feel like it, you are the one calling the shots. When I first saw Instagram flooded with self affirmations I thought they seemed silly, but they work! Just that little ray of positivity every morning can really brighten your day.

With the rise of social media, in some ways mental health could be seen to have gotten worse. But it isn't all bad- with Instagram accounts that post motivation, provide people to talk to and build communities of teens just like you, social media can become a positive resource in everybody's journey with their own mental health. Increased use of social media also leads to movements, increased awareness of mental health issues and what we can do to help. You are not alone, and with accounts like @teensurvivalkit1, you never have to be.
